IndyCar release 2018 aero concept designs

When the Verizon IndyCar Series’ Jay Frye, announced the next generation of Indycars would be more visually pleasing, and more traditional he wasn’t kidding.

IndyCar released computer-generated renderings of the cars with the universal aero kits, to be introduced in 2018.

“While this remains a work in progress, we are encouraged with where the development of the 2018 car stands,” said Jay Frye, IndyCar president of competition and operations.

“The look of the car is bold, the performance data from simulations is meeting targeted goals and safety enhancements built into the design will be substantial.”

The new cars harken back to the CART-era, especially the 1996 season.

The 2018 design has a sleek and simplified single piece front wing without the aero vanes and scoops; reminiscent of the 1996 design. From profile view, the sidepods seem to take visual cues from the Ferrari LaFerrari. The engine cover is also more aerodynamically efficient, tapered, and more traditional. The rear wing is wider and lower in comparison to the current generation.

Tino Belli, IndyCar director of aerodynamic development said IndyCar is looking to balance aerodynamics with traditional styling.

“We’ve been working on the aerodynamics to suit the look, rather than the other way around.

“A key component of the new car is for it to generate most of its downforce from underneath instead of on top. This will improve racing and passing opportunities by decreasing the turbulent air that the Indycar leaves in its wake.

“We’re working on creating more of the downforce from the underwing,” Belli said. “The hole in the floor (of the undertray on this year’s car) will be sealed for the road courses and short ovals, but will still be open for the superspeedways.”

While IndyCar note these are not the final designs, if the final design resembles the concepts; IndyCar traditionalists will be extremely happy.
