Abt edges out Turvey for Mexico ePrix pole

Daniel Abt will start on pole position for the Mexican ePrix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

In what was an unpredictable qualifying session which saw a number Formula E’s big hitters qualify well down.

Oliver Turvey will start second on his 30th birthday ahead of Venturi’s Maro Engel.

Jose Maria Lopez and Jean-Eric Vergne made the superpole shootout and qualified fourth and fifth respectively.

Group One

The first group consisted some of Formula E’s biggest hitters, championship rivals Sebastien Buemi and Lucas di Grassi, Nick Heidfeld, Sam Bird and Mitch Evans.

Despite dominating both practice sessions, Buemi ended the first part of qualifying behind Mahindra’s Heidfeld who led group one. Bird was just behind the German while di Grassi struggled for pace and ended up behind Jaguar’s Evans.

Group Two

The track continued to ramp up in terms of performance which saw NEXTEV’s Oliver Turvey take top spot on a 1m02.712s ahead of Daniel Abt, and Jose Maria Lopez moving championship contender di Grassi down to last of all.

Group Three

Proceedings in group three were briefly halted after Loic Duval crashed at Turn 1.

Techeetah’s Jean-Eric Vergne was the only man in group three to secure a top five spot and a temporary spot in the superpole shootout.

Nicholas Prost was unable to better his team-mate’s efforts and was only 11th.

Group Four

Engel, Jerome D’Ambrosio, Felix Rosenqvist, Esteban Gutierrez and Adam Carroll took part in the final group.

Engel was the only man to make it into the top five while Gutierrez was only 13th on his debut.
