Kaltenborn: Sauber needs to make clear improvements in 2017

Sauber team principal Monisha Kaltenborn says the Swiss outfit needs to make clear improvements in 2017 after several difficult seasons at the back of the Formula 1 grid.

The Hinwill-based team became the second F1 team to launch its 2017 car ahead of pre-season testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya which gets underway on February 27.

Sauber finished a lowly 10th in the constructors’ championship, scoring points on only one occasion. The team does look to be in a better financial position since the takeover by Longbow Finance S.A.

Kaltenborn believes her team is now in a better position to move back into the sport’s midfield.

“Together with Longbow Finance S. A., we have great opportunities to be competitive again and to return to previous successes in Formula One,” she said.

“We want to position ourselves with a new approach, and we have already taken the first steps in order to build a solid foundation for the future.

“We clearly have to improve,” she added. “With the Sauber C36, we have a solid basis as well as the resources to further develop the car through the season. This will be important to establish in midfield.”

Marcus Ericsson remains at Sauber for a third season with Mercedes protege Pascal Wehrlein joining the team from Manor replacing the departing Felipe Nasr.
