Berlin ePrix set for Tempelhof Airport return?

The Berlin ePrix could be set to return to Tempelhof Airport for round seven of the FIA Formula E Championship after the Berlin Senate decided against the race being held in Karl-Marx-Allee.

Tempelhof Airport, the location of the first Berlin ePrix is currently being utilised as a refugee shelter, which resulted in a location change for season two’s ePrix. Karl-Marx-Allee was chosen by the organisers for season two, but now a new location is needed for season three following the decision from the Senate.

Johannes Schnieder, the Green party’s transport policy spokesman had this to say about the Senate’s decision: “Motorsport events should only be taking place on suitable race tracks.”

“The massive restrictions caused by the construction, the event itself and the dismantling of the barriers causes too much noise pollution, which affected all residents.”

The city’s Mayor, Michael Muller is said to still be in favour of the race, with talks of a return to Tempelhof Airport allegedly underway.

Speaking to Autosport, a Formula E spokesman said, “we are in constant dialogue and cooperating with local authorities to determine the final location of the race and are thankful for the continued interest and support shown from the mayor to host a race in the city of Berlin.”

The original Tempelhof Airport track was 1.5 miles long and consisted of 17 corners.
