Will we see an orange McLaren make its way onto the Formula One grid in 2017? Many sources have led us to believe so.
The Woking-based team first debuted their orange Formula One car in 1968 and the iconic orange livery remained on the grid all the way till 1971, but the current McLaren is chrome and dark grey – the colours have remained the same for over 15 years.
McLaren has been very reluctant for change, with Ron Dennis, the team boss at that time, said he saw no reason a for change.
“We have had the same [discussions about livery] inside the team, all of these people were saying, why don’t we make it orange – because that was the old colour of McLaren.
“Well, I say, ‘you just said it – it was the old colour of McLaren. Why the hell do we want to go backwards? It won’t change just to make a few people in the company happier because they want it orange or they want it yellow, it [the livery] will only change for commercial reasons.”
However, with the new McLaren boss, Zak Brown, eager to revitalise the team, it is clear that McLaren will change significantly from now on – and that may include the livery.
He announced at the 2017 Autosport International Show in Birmingham that the livery has been signed off by team members, and the fans would be very pleased about how the car looks like both technically and visually.
Another hint that strongly suggests that Mclaren is going back to orange would be from the use of orange in the tweet that confirmed the car’s launch on the February 24
