Maldonado in talks to join IndyCar for 2017 season

Former Formula One race winner Pastor Maldonado is in talks with KV Racing to join the IndyCar grid for the upcoming season.

Motorsport have reported that the Venezuelan is interested in joining the American motorsport series, but that he wouldn’t race any of the oval tracks on the 2017 calendar. This would leave KV Racing looking for another driver to take over for races like the Indy 500.

The team have enjoyed 14 seasons in IndyCar and Champ Car, but it is understood that they may not compete in 2017 if they aren’t able to bring in Maldonado.

The 31-year-old is known for winning the F1 Spanish Grand Prix in 2012, Williams’ only win in the previous 12 seasons. However, for some, his reputation has been marred by many racing incidents during his career.

KV Racing has fielded former F1 drivers before, with Sebastien Bourdais leaving the team for 2017 after three years with them. Rubens Barrichello also drove for the team in the 2012 season, a year after retiring from F1.
