Aleshin’s future in IndyCar thrown into doubt

Mikhail Aleshin’s future at Schmidt Peterson Motorsports has been thrown into doubt due to problems with sponsorship, US motorsports magazine Racer reports.

The 29-year-old Russian, who joined Indycar with the team before the start of the 2014 IndyCar season, looked set to stay in the series after some impressive oval races.

However, it is understood that there are problems with the team and Aleshin’s Russian sponsor. He was kept out of the 2015 season due to US and Russia sanctions stopping payments from being made to Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, and the same may be the case again.

Aleshin was able to finish as high as second place in his first IndyCar season, although he missed the final race at Fontana Speedway after being badly injured during a practice session.

He spent 2015 racing in the European Le Mans Series, before returning to IndyCar for the 2015 season finale at Sonoma. In 2016 he equalled his best finishing position while also getting his first pole position of his IndyCar career.
