Top five aim for Newey in 2017

Harrison Newey is hoping for wins in his second season in the European Formula 3 championship.

The British driver is yet to confirm which team he’ll be racing for this season, but told Read Motorsport he expects to remain with Van Amersfoort, where he made his F3 debut, for 2017. season.

Newey spent 2016 competing with the team alongside Callum Ilott, Anthoine Hubert, and Pedro Piquet. He finished 18th in the season with five points finishes, but believes the top five is possible this season.

“Hopes for the season: to pick up wins, podiums here and there,” Newey said.

The 18-year-old didn’t finish higher than sixth in his debut season.

“Really, to just get as high up in the championship as I can. I think top five in the championship is really my aim.”

Newey is currently competing in the MRF Challenge Formula, which competes over the winter break on four Asian circuits. The extra racing will keep Newey in the right mindset and, currently running second in the championship, it might seem like top five in the European F3 might be a low target, but Newey knows he’ll have tough competition this season.

“I was teammates with Callum Ilott last year. He’s hugely quick. He’s gone to Prema. They obviously have a very good car and have been competitive over the last few years so I think he’ll be one of the top boys.

“I think, also, Jake Hughes coming down from GP3 to Formula 3: he’ll be really quick. Hitech had a good car last year so I think they’ll be up there. Lando [Norris] obviously is going to be quick. So I think it’s going to be a very tough grid next year.”
