Former F1 star Kubica set for first endurance race

Former Formula One race winner Robert Kubica is pushing for a full-time return to circuit racing in 2017.

The Pole, who claimed victory in the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix for BMW, was forced to quit open-wheel racing after suffering hand and arm injuries in a rally crash in early 2011.

Since then Kubica, who was seen by many as a potential future world champion, has continued racing in the WRC but a return to the racetrack had always a goal.

Indeed it is understood he even tested in Renault’s F1 simulator last year not long after making his first appearance on a racing circuit since 2011 in a Renault Sport Trophy race at Spa-Francorchamps.

His participation in the end-of-year rookie test in the WEC, driving a ByKolles LMP1 car, was another statement of his intention to return and endurance racing does indeed appear to be his prime target.

Kubica announced via Twitter that he will drive a Porsche 911 GT3 in the Dubai 24 Hours on January 12-14 and an impressive showing could lead to something bigger given he is still highly regarded by many even if his F1 career was cut short.

If you never got to see what the Pole was capable of in an F1 car, here’s an onboard from Monaco in his final year with Renault in 2010.
