Massa vows to push after difficult Brazil qualifying

Felipe Massa will give it his all to recover from a disappointing qualifying session at his final Brazilian Grand Prix.

The local hero was the biggest loser after a number of impressive and surprising performances on Saturday dropped his Williams to 13th on the grid.

Indeed, both Grove cars missed out on the top 10 as Fernando Alonso and Romain Grosjean took the places they had filled for much of the weekend.

Having looked like guaranteed Q3 contenders in practice, even threatening Ferrari and Red Bull on Friday, Massa admitted the big change in temperatures hurt the team.

“The car didn’t work in the proper way and the front tyres stopped working,” he said reflecting an issue quite a few had on Saturday.

“I was suffering from understeer and my best lap of Q2 ended up being my first one, so we need to understand what happened.”

Despite the obvious disappointment, the Brazilian was thankful for the support of the Sao Paulo crowd and promised he would target a major push forward in the race on Sunday.

“It was absolutely amazing to get out of the car and feel the support from the crowd and to feel the love I have for these people as well as the love they have for me.

“I’m not happy with the result for them but I will try everything I can tomorrow to give them a better result, as well as for my team, especially as it’s my last race here in Brazil,” he added.

Whether Felipe can give his home fans something to cheer may depend on the weather as the forecast rain could prove a major challenge to Williams.

However, having won in the mixed conditions in 2008 nothing can be ruled out just yet even if his pre-weekend ambition of a podium currently looks a long way away.
