Magnussen to replace Gutierrez at Haas for 2017

Kevin Magnussen will partner Romain Grosjean at Haas for 2017 it is understood.

Last month it was revealed the American team had offered the Dane a route out of Renault, as the French manufacturer continues to ponder their options.

With names like Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon all linked with his seat, the former Renault 3.5 champion has seemingly decided to secure his stay in Formula One even if it may mean joining a team that may not be as competitive.

Haas enjoyed an incredible start to life on the F1 grid, scoring top six finishes in the opening two races through Grosjean, but brake problems and an inability to maximise tyre performance have hampered the team since.

While they will likely improve in 2017, as they learn from the errors of their debut season, Renault is expected to be one of the big movers as new rules and big investment into the Enstone operation wipe much of the slate clean.

Magnussen will replace Esteban Gutierrez for next season on a two-year deal. Indeed, despite Renault’s struggles, the Dane is ahead of the Mexican in the Drivers’ championship with the Ferrari-linked driver having finished in 11th place on multiple occasions.

Read Motorsport understands, however, a return to Sauber is on the cards for Gutierrez as his financial backing will replace some of the funds brought by Felipe Nasr who is expected to take Magnussen’s seat.

Renault’s second driver, Jolyon Palmer, is also still in the frame to remain at Renault, after several impressive recent performances. But given the aspirations of the team moving forward an all-new line-up, including the already confirmed Nico Hulkenberg, is highly likely.
