Nico Hulkenberg has leaped to the defence of compatriot Sebastian Vettel after the German was the subject of a fierce criticism following a foul-mouthed radio rant at the Mexican Grand Prix.
Vettel was heard telling FIA race director Charlie Whiting to “f**k off” over the radio in Sunday’s race, incensed after Max Verstappen seemingly retained third place by running off the road at turn one but refused to yield.
The Ferrari driver controversially escaped a penalty, though he did receive a firm warning from the FIA, having personally apologised to Whiting and expressed his regret.
Though many believe Vettel’s actions warranted far more than merely a slap on the wrist, Hulkenberg empathises with the four-time world champion, explaining that a driver is under intense pressure “in the heat of the race”.

“It’s always the world against Seb,” Hulkenberg said. “I’m sure Charlie is not that happy, not impressed. Of course, sometimes you go ‘what a w**ker’ or ‘what an idiot’ but usually they cut it out.
“But it does happen in the heat of the race, don’t take this wrong but in the media centre or at home on the couch, everything is on the limit with the finest margins and you try hard. So if something doesn’t go right you just feel ‘Aghhh’. Seb is very special in that regard.”
The meltdown comes as perhaps the most frustrating campaign of Vettel’s career nears its climax. The German has struggled to find his best form amidst Kimi Raikkonen’s resurgence, while Ferrari have tumbled dramatically short of their pre-season expectations, gradually losing touch with Red Bull and Mercedes.
