Star Driver: 2016 Mexican GP

Last year, the return of the Mexican Grand Prix brought one of the best crowds of the season to the Formula One calendar. I think it’s fair to say that this year’s race lived up to the expectations set by last year’s. Although the race didn’t quite play into the hands of the Mexican drivers, it did go well for Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson, which is why he is my star driver of the Mexican Grand Prix.

Marcus Ericsson crossed the finish line in 11th position, his highest finish for the whole season! Although he just missed out on winning Sauber’s first point his drive cannot be criticised. Ericsson collided with Manor’s Pascal Wehrlein in Turn 1 of the first lap leaving his car with damage to the front wing. As a result of this, Ericsson was forced to pit to replace the damaged parts. Obviously, this led to Ericsson losing even more positions. He returned to the race track with a battle to fight. If you ask me, Ericsson won that battle.

The combination of his one-stop strategy and seizing every opportunity that came his way, meant Marcus climbed his way up the positions and found himself just outside of the points. Although the result must have been frustrating for the team I can say it was a real pleasure to see Sauber competing for a points finish.

Congratulations to Marcus for having such an amazing comeback during the race. I look forward to seeing the team continue to fight for points in the remaining two races of the 2016 season.
