Audi have announced that it will no longer be participating in the World Endurance Championships from next season onwards as they look to focus on their Formula E programme.
The German outfit will terminate its FIA WEC commitment including the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours.
In a statement released earlier today, Audi confirmed their attentions will now turn to the FIA Formula E championship and continuation of their DTM programme. They have yet to decide whether they will be continuing their efforts in World Rallycross.
Audi’s Chairman of the Board of Management Rupert Stadler confirmed that Audi will be focusing all of their efforts on ‘electric power’ as they see it as the future of motorsport.
“We’re going to contest the race for the future on electric power.
“As our production cars are becoming increasingly electric, our motorsport cars, as Audi’s technological spearheads, have to even more so.”
In terms of the Formula E team, Audi currently have a strong relationship with the ABT Schaeffler squad which finished second in last year’s Constructors’ Championship. Today’s news means an intensified partnership will ultimately result in ‘full factory commitment’.
