Star Driver: 2016 Malaysia GP

The Malaysia Grand Prix has always been one of my favourite races of the Formula One calendar; it’s always so exhilarating! I don’t know about you, but this year was no exception for me.

The race was definitely exciting for a number of different reasons: it featured wheel-to-wheel racing, several close calls, and it was Jenson Button’s 300th Formula One Grand Prix. Only two other drivers in Formula One history have achieved the same: Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. However, there is something Jenson was the first to do and that was to score points in his 300th race. This is one of the many reasons I have selected Jenson Button as my Star Driver of the 2016 Malaysia Grand Prix.

Jenson Button is one of the most experienced drivers on the grid this season. A lot of people were sad to hear that he’d be taking an ambassadorial role with McLaren next year, rather than being in a regular race seat. However, for me, it just makes these last few races featuring him even more important and it’s clear that Jenson is still enjoying his racing.

On Saturday Button qualified in ninth position after fighting others off to grab a place in Q3 despite having issues with traffic. Getting into Q3 is incredible but unfortunately, it’s not where the points are won. He needed to translate his qualifying success into race success. This proved to be no problem for the 2009 World Champion as he crossed the finishing line in ninth position, adding another two points to his tally.

Congratulations on completing your 300th Grand Prix, Jenson! I can’t wait to see you complete you 301st.
