Formula One fans were treated to an incredibly dramatic Malaysia Grand Prix which saw Daniel Ricciardo take his first victory since the 2014 Belgium Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen finished second to complete the Red Bull one-two, their first since the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix. It further increases Red Bull’s grip on second place in the Constructors’ Championship.
Lewis Hamilton had been leading the race until disaster struck as his Mercedes power-unit set alight and with it his chances of winning the race and taking the Drivers’ Championship lead from his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg.
The German drove an impressive recovery race after being punted by his fellow countryman Sebastian Vettel on the opening lap of the race. Ferrari’s leading man was immediately eliminated.
Vettel’s teammate Kimi Raikkonen brought his Ferrari home in fourth place despite contact with Rosberg, which resulted in the championship leader receiving a ten second time penalty.
Hamilton’s retirement means he now is 23 points behind Rosberg and Ricciardo tightens his grip on third place in the Drivers’ Championship. Raikkonen is also now the highest placed Ferrari driver.
