Who was our star driver at the Singapore GP?

The Singapore Grand Prix is a favourite of many Formula One fans each year. The night environment makes it incomparable to any other track on the race calendar.

This year’s race was no different and certainly started with some excitement as Romain Grosjean didn’t even make it to the start. There was contact just after lights out as Carlos Sainz spun Nico Hulkenberg into the wall. But when the race began to calm down it became a lot easier to track the driver’s performances.

With each roll of the standings at the bottom of the television screen, something was abundantly clear, Sebastian Vettel, who started last after a roll bar failure in qualifying, was making progress through the field.

For this reason, the Ferrari man is my star driver of the 2016 Singapore Grand Prix.

After the difficult qualifying session, and a subsequent grid penalty for taking new power unit components, Vettel started his race at the very back of the grid in 22nd position.

This isn’t a position any driver wants to be in but thankfully, the German was piloting a Ferrari. The team may not be leading the Constructor’s Championship, but it cannot be denied that the car has significant power.

Vettel seemed to use every ounce of that power as he managed to push himself forward into fifth position by the finish of the race.

If there’s anything I love about Formula One, it’s watching drivers battle their way into the points so it was a pleasure to see Vettel pushing himself and his car to get into points. Making up a huge 17 positions in 61 laps is incredible and shouldn’t go without recognition.

I’m sure Vettel doesn’t want to find himself in that position at the start of a race for the rest of the season but it would be incredible to watch him make that level of progress in every one of the final six races left in the 2016 F1 season.

I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Vettel on his race. He certainly turned his weekend around and I very much look forward to seeing what he does in Malaysia!
