Raikkonen pleased with ‘good and solid race’

Kimi Raikkonen praised his fourth-place finish of the Singapore Grand Prix as a ‘good and solid race’.

Raikkonen started the race in fifth position, but a poor start from Max Verstappen saw the Finn jump up to fourth – the position he retained until the end of the race.

There was a short duration of time where Raikkonen held third position and had looked to have optimised Lewis Hamilton’s race strategy and mistake on track to get on the podium. However, a quick decision to follow Hamilton’s late pit stop for a softer, newer tyre saw Raikkonen fall behind the Brit as he performed the undercut.

Despite that, however, the Finn was pleased with how his Ferrari performed.

“It was a good and solid race, the car was behaving well and we had a pretty good speed,” Raikkonen said after the race.

He, obviously, seemed a little disgruntled about losing third place on a track that is so difficult to overtake on. He also acknowledged that if the Ferrari had more speed he would have been able to finish on the podium.

“I don’t know how and why they managed to jump us, and I don’t know what would have happened if we would have stayed out,” he said in reference to Hamilton getting passed him in the closing stages in the race. “We have to go through everything, see what happened and what we could have done better.

“Today we gained one place from the starting position, but of course this is not the result we are looking for, we are trying to be in position to win, but we need to make the car a bit faster.”

Ferrari was unable to retake second position in the Constructor’s Championship today after finishing fourth and fifth respectively, but the gap is reduced to Red Bull, now only 15 points. They will be focusing on outscoring their Milton Keynes-based rivals the next race meet in Malaysia as they chase down their elusive victory in 2016.
