FP2 Lap Time Analysis: Germany

Qualifying Prediction

Since the previous qualifying in Hungary was rain-affected, the season FP2-to-Qualifying multipliers have been carried over from Silverstone:

And the predicted team qualifying order for the 2016 German Grand Prix is as follows:

Team

Fastest Qualifying time

Mercedes 1:14.09
Red Bull 1:14.82
Ferrari 1:15.03
Force India 1:15.20
Williams 1:15.54
Toro Rosso 1:15.89
McLaren 1:15.98
Haas 1:16.30
Renault 1:16.69
Sauber 1:16.77
Manor 1:17.09

*McLaren and Force India have recently changed their weekend program and actual times may be more than 0.4 seconds off the prediction. If rain hits the circuit overnight the qualifying times will be slightly slower than expected due to track evolution resetting – even if it is bone-dry by Q1.

FP2 Long Runs

Supersoft tyre

Daniel Ricciardo was the stand out performer in FP2’s long runs with both compounds of tyre he used.

Hamilton and Verstappen both struggling to match teammates’ race pace on Friday.

Very close in the midfield. Even Renault look to have a chance. Even Renault.

Bottas’ pace was impressively faster than Raikkonen and the Force India’s until laps seven & eight.

When stacked together in a race, Rosberg’s lead is clear. Four seconds ahead of Ricciardo after 12 laps. Hamilton behind is with the Red Bull duo but was told to go very easy through turn one to avoid a third reprimand of the season.

At the opposite end of the grid, Haryanto is beating Nasr eight days after the team were bought by new Swiss owners.

Again, Ricciardo was able to improve lap after lap and, on lap eight, was considerably faster than anyone else. The Australian was running the same program as others around him. With 50 minutes to go in the session begin a run on the option tyre and switch to the prime afterwards.

Another impressive performance from Magnussen who could also preserve his tyres well.

Hulkenberg begins to stretch away from the Ferrari’s after lap 11 and is matching Hamilton and Verstappen for pace.

The tyre wear looks very close between the two compounds this weekend for a change. The supersoft had a 1.5-second pace advantage on low fuel runs. A similar advantage on high fuel would make for an easy compound preference in the race.
