Star Driver: 2016 Hungarian GP

The Hungarian Grand Prix is one that usually requires you to expect the unexpected but yesterday’s race didn’t exactly provide us with anything too surprising as Mercedes crossed the line with another 1-2 finish under their belts. Despite the unsurprising result, I found it quite easy to select my Star Driver. For the first time, Kimi Raikkonen is my Star Driver.

Recently Kimi Raikkonen’s contract with Ferrari was extended thanks to his impressive performance in the first half of this season. After watching this weekend it’s clear Raikkonen isn’t just finishing well, he’s driving well.

Qualifying on Saturday didn’t quite go as planned for Raikkonen as he was out in Q2. Starting the race in 14th position wasn’t going to be easy for the Ferrari driver but gradually, Raikkonen battled his way up the leaderboard. Finally, Kimi Raikkonen passed the chequered flag in sixth place after making up an impressive eight places during the race.

On top of gaining an incredible number of places during the race, Raikkonen additionally finished with the fastest lap. He completed that lap (lap 52) in 1m23.086s, half a second faster than anyone else; a gap worthy of the DHL Fastest Lap award.

Raikkonen is clearly putting in the work asked of him as he continues to win points for his team. I look forward to seeing Raikkonen’s performances through the second half of this season.

Congratulations on the renewal of your contract, Kimi. I can’t wait to see what you’ll achieve in the 2017 Ferrari!
