Formula E Season Two Review: Andretti

While they found themselves further back on the grid than they would like, Andretti were able to clinch seventh thanks mainly to Robin Frijns.

Their 49 points was more than enough to surpass both NEXTEV and Team Aguri in the Teams’ Championship, 17 points ahead of the latter. 45 of their points came from Robin Frijns, who was also able to grab a surprise podium at Putrajaya.

Unlike other teams there was a big gap between the two drivers, so they could have finished further up the championship if Frijns’ teammate was more competitive. They were also one of only two teams to use last years powertrain, which makes Frijns’ performance at least impressive.

Frijns has already been confirmed to drive for the team again in season three, although he doesn’t know who his teammate will be yet. There are also rumours that BMW are going to work with Andretti, after the company confirmed they were working with an existing Formula E team.

Robin Frijns

Championship Position: 12th

Points: 45

Best Finish: 3rd

Frijns joined Formula E and the Andretti team at the beginning of season two, and he has been impressive throughout the year.

While the double retirement at the London ePrix will be a disappointment, he has performed well during the rest of his time in the championship, with a sixth in Berlin and a fifth in Mexico City. He was also able to finish on the podium at Putrajaya with a broken car for the final few laps.

The best argument for the Dutch driver is the amount of points he brought to Andretti. With 45 of the 49 points coming from him, he single-handedly helped his team beat Team Aguri and NEXTEV.

Simona de Silvestro

Championship Position: 18th

Points: 4

Best Finish: 9th

Truth be told Silvestro hasn’t been awfully great this season. She has had a few decent performances, but overall only brought home four points compared to her teammates 45.

Only twice she finished inside the top ten, getting ninth position at both Long Beach and Berlin. She finished 14th three times and only retired from the race at the first and last ePrix of the season.

It doesn’t look too likely that she will be returning to the team, as she has said that there are other moves she could make outside of Formula E.
