Ricciardo: Stewards were right to penalise Rosberg

Daniel Ricciardo has voiced his own opinion on the collision between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg at the Austrian Grand Prix; believing the stewards were right to punish the German.

Ricciardo crossed the line in fifth place behind Rosberg in Austria, who was deemed to have caused an avoidable incident that took place on the final lap of the race.

The stewards concluded that Rosberg had not left racing room when the teammates made contact at Turn 2.

Although the penalty Rosberg received made no difference to his race result, Ricciardo feels the current championship leader was at fault.

“Yeah I think so,” he said when asked if drivers know what leaving racing room means.

“As a driver you know where the limit is, sure you can squeeze someone a bit but at some point you’ve got to give them that little bit of room.

“Obviously the stewards thought he [Rosberg] didn’t leave Lewis with really much choice, so I guess thats why they gave him the penalty.

“It was a tight one, I see their point of view.”

Ricciardo adds that he and the team are confident the Silverstone circuit should suit the Red Bull.

“Yeah absolutely, the way the cars been working this year we should be pretty competitive at Silverstone.

“We got a podium a couple of years ago here. I think we can be close; I think it’s going to be really close with Ferrari.

“I’m excited, it’s a circuit I really enjoy, I’m looking forward to it.”
