Vettel fastest as Rosberg crashes in Austria

Ferrari led a 1-2 in final practice at the Red Bull Ring with Sebastian Vettel leading Kimi Raikkonen by 0.136s.

Whilst it was plain sailing for Ferrari, both Mercedes suffered problems and struggled for rear tyre gaining.

Championship leader Nico Rosberg suffered a suspension issue with 15 minutes of the session remaining. Initially, it looked like driver error but replays showed the rear of Rosberg’s W07 suffered a failure causing him to spin on the exit of Turn 3. This resulted in a brief red flag period.

Lewis Hamilton continued to struggle for speed and was only third fastest, 0.210s off the pace set by Vettel.

Daniel Ricciardo completed 22 laps on his way to fifth place, a fraction ahead of Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen.

Next up were the Williams duo of Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa. The former spun at Turn 8 late on into the session.

Nico Hulkenberg and the McLaren duo of Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button rounded out the top 10.

Manor continued to show strong speed and look contenders to progress into Q2 as Pascal Wehrlein set the 14th fastest time of the session. The Red Bull Ring is a circuit he is familiar with having raced at it on several occasions in DTM.
