Sebastian Vettel will start the Austrian Grand Prix five places further back from wherever he qualifies after opting to change his gearbox for this weekend.
Ferrari investigated the gearbox, which Vettel used on his way to a second-place finish in Baku, and found a potential problem that could lead to a failure.
Vettel did not have any problems when using the gearbox in Baku, but the team did not want to take any risk with valuable championship points at stake.
Under the FIA rules, drivers must make their gearbox’s last at least six races before it is allowed to changed.
It is understood that Ferrari felt the Red Bull Ring was the best place to make the change with the track offering a number of good overtaking opportunities for Vettel to make up ground on Sunday.
As well as a new gearbox, Ferrari have spent more tokens to improve engine development; the token is believed to have been spent on the MGU-K.
This means the Maranello based outfit have spent a total of 29 tokens this season and have just three left remaining.
