Magnussen happy for Renault to switch focus to 2017

Kevin Magnussen admits he would not mind if Renault decided to forget 2016 and move their focus towards the new regulations coming next year.

Wider rear tyres, more aggressive looks and faster cars are just a few of the features that are planned to help close the field and spice up the show.

Magnussen has managed to secure Renault’s only points of the season so far, finishing seventh in Russia, and says switching focus to 2017 would be fine with this year’s car way off the pace.

“As a driver what you care about at the end of the day is winning and we are so far off that that in my mind I would be fine to switch focus completely because we are clearly not going to win with this car,” the Dane said.

“The sooner we can start winning the happier I am and that’s what I want to focus on, so shifting focus as quick as possible I think is the best thing.

The former McLaren driver added the team are trying to get a better understanding of the car race by race and played down Renault’s chances of vast improvements in the coming races.

“I think we have tried some very different things to learn about the car, to get a better understanding of the car we have and basically we are going back now to something we know and that gives a little bit of optimism,” said Magnussen.

“I don’t think it’s going to a lot better than previous races but hopefully we will be able to know what we have and to get a better weekend.”
