Binder to replace Matsushita at ART for Austrian GP2 round

Rene Binder will replace Nobuharu Matsushita at ART Grand Prix for this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix.

The Japanese racer was handed a one-round ban in Baku, Azerbaijan for multiple accounts of dangerous driving in the sprint race.

Rene Binder is a vastly experienced single seater race, having competed in 69 races in GP2 over the past four seasons for four different teams.

He currently drives in Formula V8 3.5 for Lotus. The Frenchman has scored points in seven of the first eight races and currently sits fourth in the Drivers’ Standings, 56 points off the championship lead.

The 24-year-old spoke about why he couldn’t refuse a chance to return to GP2 for his home race.

“I like GP2 but I still have some unfinished business with it so I always said that if there was a chance to get a drive with a top team within the season I would not hesitate to take the challenge.”

ART Grand Prix team manager Sébastien Philippe commented on the appointment:

“We are really happy to welcome Rene to the team and to offer him the opportunity to drive at his home race this weekend. We will do our best, as we always do with all our drivers, to get the best possible result in Spielberg.”

Nobuharu Matsushita will return for round 5 in Silverstone, with a very big point to prove.
