Wehrlein disappointed to miss out on Q2 in Baku

Manor Racing’s Pascal Wehrlein admits he is disappointed to miss out on making Q2 after making several mistakes on his flying laps in qualifying for the European Grand Prix.

Both Manor drivers narrowly missed out on a place in Q2 but will be buoyed by their strongest qualifying of the season, outperforming McLaren’s Jenson Button and beating both Renault drivers.

The German made a couple of mistakes on each of his flying laps in Q1 which cost him a place in the next segment of qualifying.

“I’m a bit disappointed with qualifying as Q2 was definitely possible today. The DRS was disabled on my quickest lap when the yellow flag came out in turns 3 and 4, so I lost a couple of tenths there. My second lap was better from that point of view but I lost a couple more tenths due to tyre degradation.”

The GP2 race, which took place before final practice, saw only 10 cars make the chequered flag and Wehrlein believes there could be a chance of points for Manor.

“We had good pace for sure and our package is working well here. That’s how it is today but tomorrow is a new day and I’ll give it my best shot. The most important thing is to finish the race, as I’m sure there will be some good opportunities tomorrow after seeing how GP2 went today. With Safety Cars, and a strong performance for us, a really good result is possible.”

The highly-rated German was out-qualified by Manor teammate Rio Haryanto for the fourth time this season.
