Marcus Ericsson celebrated a good race despite finishing outside the points again.
The Sauber driver started the race in 21st, after his three-place penalty he carried over from the collision in Monaco. Initially, the Swedish driver struggled with the ultrasoft tyres on the cold track.
“I think the first stint on ultrasoft tyres was not ideal, as I struggled a lot with grip,” Ericsson said.
Ericsson switched to soft tyres on the fourteenth lap, switching from a one stop to a two stop strategy. The soft tyre gave Ericsson the grip he needed to race against Kevin Magnussen and Pascal Wehrlein.
“Our initial plan was a one stop strategy, but we then had to revert to a two stopper. Once we got onto the soft tyres for the next two stints of the race, I had a good run and was able to pass Kevin [Magnussen] and Pascal [Wehrlein].”
Next up for Ericsson were the Haas drivers of Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutierrez.
“Overall, a good effort, as we also came close to Haas.”
The Swedish driver was pleased that the Sauber was able to catch up with the Haas duo, but wasn’t able to mount a proper challenge against them. After pitting again on lap 29 for fresh soft tyres, Ericsson was able to catch up with Haas but wasn’t able to mount a proper challenge against them.
