Salom, who was riding for the SAG Team, was involved in an incident during the second free practice session for Moto2 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. With 24 minutes remaining, the session was immediately red-flagged.

Medical assistance was quickly sent to the Spanish rider, who appeared to suffer a massive fall at turn 12. Two ambulances treated Salom at the scene and the air ambulance was deployed.

He was transfered to the Hospital General de Catalunya, where he underwent surgery. Unfortunately he passed away due to his injuries at 16:55 local time. He was only 24 years old.

Salom debuted in the 125 class at Jerez in 2009. He claimed nine victories and 25 podiums throughout his career, finishing runner up to Sandro Cortese in the inaugural Moto3 season in 2012. The following year he finished third in the Moto3 standings behind Maverick Vinales and Alex Rins. Salom scored his third Moto2 podium at the opening round in Qatar this year.
