London’s Formula E event at Battersea Park could face the axe next season, with this year’s season finale also under threat
Battersea Park was home to a tense title deciding battle last year and this season looks to be heading the same way with Renault e.Dams and ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport currently just 11 points apart in the teams’ standings.
With the event due to take place during the first weekend of July, protesters have lodged a claim for a judicial review by London’s High Court into the legality of Wandsworth Council’s plans to close Battersea Park and surrounding roads.
The judicial review is planned for this week and will decide the future of this year’s race as well as future events. Organisers may be looking at an agreement which sees this year’s event go ahead on the basis that Formula E does not return to Battersea Park in the future.
“We’re looking at every option. The priority is to focus on season two,” said Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag.
“After that we see. We have a contract with the council to continue for another year [but] we are open and flexible.
“I am not 100 per cent [the judicial review will go in the championship’s favour] but I’m quite optimistic because I have good reasons.
“We have to respect the timings and the processes. This one is out of our control so we will see what happens.
“We are working on some solutions in our control, we always do as much as we can.”
