Sainz delighted with sixth in Spain

Carlos Sainz says he was delighted to finish sixth at his home race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Sainz had an impressive race that saw him ending in sixth. After the Mercedes tangled together into Turn 3, Sainz found himself up in third proving he had had a fantastic start to his home Grand Prix as he started the race in eighth.

“We finally put a whole weekend together,” Sainz praised in post-race interviews about his race. He was very happy with his result and thanks the fans who had been in his grandstand at Turn 12 for giving him “an extra boost” through his trouble-free race.

“P6 is an amazing result for me and the team, and to achieve this at my home race makes it even better. The start to the race was great, I think I did one of the best race starts of my life to be honest, running in a podium position and battling with Ferrari… Those first laps were really nice! I felt comfortable during the rest of the race, the team did a very good job with the pit-stops and I had a big smile on my face when I crossed the line in sixth position.”

Sainz also applauded old teammate Max Verstappen who managed to win his maiden Grand Prix on his first outing for the senior Red Bull team, making him the youngest winner, points scorer and driver to finish on the podium in Formula One history.

“I’d also like to congratulate Max on his win today, I’m very happy for him and the Red Bull family – I think it’s great that Red Bull brings young talent into Formula 1 and we keep succeeding, proving them right.”

Carlos Sainz will be hoping to have another successful weekend in two weeks time for the Monaco Grand Prix where he will try to better this weekend’s result and get more points for the Toro Rosso team. With Verstappen being promoted and performing so well Sainz will be hoping to step up and show Red Bull he can perform as well as Verstappen and that promoting him, potentially, would also be a good move.
