Wehrlein: A disappointing result today

Pascal Wehrlein, who was fighting with the Saubers at the latter end of the field for most of the race, admits the race was ‘disappointing’ but thanks his team for a good first few races and their hard work.

The rookie got off to a good start, and managed to keep his cool to avoid any problems in the first few corners. He felt his first stint was quite good but was disappointed that the Sauber’s had managed to jump him after the first pitstop.

“A disappointing result today. I got a good start and managed to avoid all the problems in the first couple of corners, then the first stint was quite good for me. I had a good fight with the Saubers but after the first pit stop they were in front of me,” he said.

After dropping behind the Sauber duo, the German pushed hard to try to overtake one of them which subsequently destroyed his tyres, forcing him to pit again. However, the drama was not over, there was trouble with the left rear which made him lose a lot of time.

“I tried to push hard to overtake one of them again but I couldn’t manage it and I destroyed my tyres behind them so I had to box again,” he said.

“At the second stop we had a problem with the left-rear which lost us a lot of time but by then I think 18th was the best we could hope for.”

He added that he is focused on heading to Europe and what he and the team can do to improve.
