Rio Haryanto’s race ended before it had really got started, after retiring from the Russian Grand Prix after just two corners.
It had been a promising start to the weekend for the Indonesian, he looked the quicker of the two Manor drivers in the practice sessions, and was less than a tenth behind his teammate in qualifying.
However, Haryanto got caught up in the chaos of Turn 2, and had to stop after suffering damage to the side of his car.
“Today I was unlucky and it’s very disappointing, especially after I made such a good start, probably my best of the season so far,” he said.
“I managed to gain a couple of places, however when I got to turn 2 there were lots of cars fighting and the Force India of [Nico] Hulkenberg spinning but I had nowhere to go. There was contact on the side of the car and quite a bit of damage, which meant I had to stop the car.”
Despite his race being short-lived, the 23-year-old took some positives away from the weekend and says that he’s now looking ahead to the race in Spain.
“After a good couple of days it’s disappointing to finish the weekend in this way, but looking at the positives I feel we have been more competitive and I’m looking forward to continuing this at the next race in Barcelona.”
