Aguri Suzuki will be stepping away from Formula E at the end of this season, with a takeover of his team currently being discussed.
The former F1 driver and team owner has confirmed he is stepping down from the team by the end of this season, following an article by Motorsport.com which linked the squad to new investment from China. A statement from Team Aguri highlighted they were in a ‘period of consultation’ over future ownership and the impending departure of Suzuki.
“Aguri Suzuki played a fundamental role in the formation of the team and we would like to thank him for his continued support,” a spokesperson for the team said in the statement. “We are now entering a new phase for the team and are in advanced discussions with new investors, but will not be able to comment further at this time.
Chinese Media Capital has been linked to the outfit, which will incidentally see Salvador Duran replaced this weekend in Paris by Ma Qinghua, who received a Formula E license this week, with a deal expected to last until the end of the season.
Team Aguri is currently one of two teams running the season one technology, although the article confirms a Renault deal for next year with discussions in place for Nissan branding.
Formula E is fast becoming attractive for car manufacturers, with Jaguar entering the series next year along with rumours of BMW. An affiliation with Nissan would be a logical stepping stone for Renault to have more influence in the series.
