Hamilton hit with grid penalty for Chinese GP

Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton has been hit with a five-place grid penalty due to a gearbox change.

Hamilton’s weekend at the Shanghai International Circuit has got a lot tougher as the Briton will start from P6 on the grid at best.

In accordance with the rules, gearboxes must be used for six consecutive races before they can be replaced.

Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg has won the opening two races of the 2016 F1 season and surely will be favourite this weekend, at a circuit where he won at in 2012.

Mercedes have since officially confirmed the news.
