According to Autosport, Imola could once again host a Formula One race again in the future, with circuit chief Selvatico Estense and Bernie Ecclestone meeting to discuss the possibility of doing so.
The circuit last hosted a Formula One race in 2006 when Michael Schumacher won the San Marino Grand Prix for Ferrari but has since undergone major reconstruction work and now hosts a round of the World Superbike Championship, as well as a round of the European Le Mans Series.
With the future of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza still uncertain, Estense and Ecclestone met in Bahrain last week to discuss the possibility of Imola returning to the Formula One calendar sometime in the future.

However, nothing definitive was reached at the meeting and Autosport believes that Imola wants to return to the Formula One calendar alongside Monza, rather than replacing it as the host of the Italian Grand Prix.
The Italian Grand Prix did take place at Imola in 1980, the only time that it has not been held at Monza in the entire history of Formula One, but the success of the 1980 race, won by Nelson Piquet, meant that the San Marino Grand Prix was created to accommodate Imola.
It is one of the only major circuits to run in an anti-clockwise direction and it would be great to see one of the classic tracks back on the Formula One calendar in the future.
