New tyre and extra warm up session for MotoGP on Sunday

After the dramatic failure of Scott Redding’s rear tyre in FP4 on Sunday, the decision has been taken to withdraw both the medium and hard compound Michelins made available to the riders for Sunday’s MotoGP race.

Instead, they will be given a brand new tyre for the race. The reason for this is that both compounds had the same construction, and Michelin were concerned that they may both be prone to similar failures on the harsh Termas de Rio Hondo track surface.

The new tyre that is compulsory for all riders will be made of a harder construction, and it’s thought that this will cope with the strains and high temperatures experienced on the track this weekend, albeit at slightly slower lap times.

In order for riders to get a feel for the new tyres, they have been given an extra half-hour free practice session. The session will take place at 900 local time, which is 1300 BST.
