Alonso declared unfit to race in Bahrain

Fernando Alonso will miss the second round of the Formula One season in Bahrain, after doctors have declared him unfit to drive following his crash in Australia.

The doctors in Bahrain have said that there is a problem with his chest after they conducted some medical tests on him ahead of the Grand Prix this weekend.

The McLaren driver crashed at almost 200mph in Melbourne, after he tagged the back of Esteban Gutierrez in the Haas, he was then sent barrel-rolling into the barriers, with the peak force of the impact measuring 47G.

An FIA statement was made that read: ‘Following an examination undertaken this morning at the Bahrain International Circuit Medical Centre, it has been decided that McLaren Honda F1 Team driver Fernando Alonso should not take part in this weekend’s Bahrain GP.’

‘Two sets of chest CT scans were compared and it was decided that there was insufficient resolution of the signs to allow him to compete on safety grounds.’

The two-time World Champion will have another scan before the Chinese Grand Prix to determine whether he is fit by then.

McLaren have since announced that they will be drafting in their reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne, who currently races in Super Formula.

The GP2 champion has been testing in Japan and will be looking to impress with the Belgian likely to replace Button or Alonso when their contracts end.
