Hamilton reflects on first pole of 2016

The 2016 Formula One season has faced a lot of controversy, but one man who’s managed to ignore that and continue from where he left off last year is the current World Champion, Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton topped the tables of each qualifying session for Mercedes, the Briton described himself as putting in some ‘sexy laps’ around the streets of Albert Park. “I enjoyed driving the car in qualifying today, I got the setup just right.”

“I enjoyed driving the car in qualifying today, I got the setup just right,” said Hamilton.

After acquiring pole for the first round of the 2016 season, Hamilton joined a very skilled and exclusive club.

Hamilton is now one of just three drivers to have secured 50 or more F1 pole positions. Hamilton joins legends, Michael Schumacher, and Ayrton Senna. Ferrari driver, Sebastian Vettel, is close to joining the club with 46 pole positions to his name.

Unfortunately, Hamilton’s accolade has been overshadowed by the disaster of the new qualifying format. The new knockout system saw Australian fans confused and with a lack of action, as with two-and-a-half minutes to go in Q3, no cars were on the track and the drivers were speaking to the media.

When asked his thoughts on the new format, he said: “One lap is neat, but that was not so exciting for the fans to watch as everyone was sat in the garages. But all my engineers said that would be the case, they say they told the FIA and FOM that that would be the case and they ignored them.”

“I miss the old days when they went out and just run and run and run. Senna would come in, sit there and then have to go and do another lap, that was cool.”

F1 fans would hope that tomorrow’s race would make up for the misery of qualifying with another classic Australian Grand Prix.
