Renault unveil new livery ahead of Melbourne

Two days before the season opener in Melbourne, Albert Park, Renault F1 have released their 2016 livery.

In February, the team revealed a ‘show car’ with a mainly black livery that they took to pre-season testing with them. It had hints of yellow on the body work and was finished in a matt coat rather than the shiny gloss that has become the expected finish on a modern day Formula One car.

With the new 2016 livery, Renault has stuck to the matt finish (a finish that is rumoured to save almost half a kilogram of weight compared to the glossy finish, a finish also rumoured to be being run on the Red Bull) but have gone back to their root for colour with a striking bright yellow livery. The livery has a main body of the classic Renault 1946 yellow, with a black front and rear wing and accents in gold around the rear of the bodywork. It had always been Renault’s intention to return to the classic look in terms of livery and they definitely have not disappointed.

“Today is about what’s in the season to come, and the important thing is the colour, that it says a lot about your identity and who you stand for,” Renault managing director Cyril Abiteboul said at the livery launch on Wednesday.

“Tonight is about our identity and what Renault stands for. I look around and it looks like people are trying to disappear from the Tarmac, so we’ve gone for something different.”
