F1 drivers oppose new qualifying format

Sergio Perez has revealed that F1 drivers were against the proposed changes to the qualifying format during last night’s meeting.

Formula One drivers met last night with race director Charlie Whiting to discuss the planned changes, and believe that it would be too complicated for both the drivers and the fans.

The original plan was to have an elimination style of qualifying in Q3, Q2, and Q1. However, it was revealed earlier this week that it could be just Q3 and Q2 that change, with the final part of qualifying remaining the same.

After the meeting last night Perez believes the current system doesn’t need to change.

“We are not happy with the new rules that they want to implement, so let’s see if they can change it.” He told Sky Sports.

“We feel that the qualifying at the moment is really good and I don’t think there’s a reason to change that.”

“It’s complicated for us already, so for the fans it will make things more and more complicated.”

Several other drivers including Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Nasr are also confused as to why the changes are being made now, with the Finn claiming he doesn’t “know what the point [of changing the rules] is.”

A decision must be made before Friday’s meeting with the World Motor Sport Council if the changes are to be introduced for the 2016 season.
