Ferrari wants F1 Qualifying format looked at again

Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne wants a re-think over the proposed changes to the format of qualifying in Formula One claiming he isn’t sure Ferrari can accept Bernie Ecclestone’s ideas.

Last week F1 team’s and the Formula One Management (FOM)  reached an agreement that would see the format of qualifying on a Saturday changed to a knockout style system in an attempt to bring more excitement and more variation in results on a Sunday.

The new format was due to come into effect at the Australian Grand Prix in just under three weeks but just a few days after the change was announced Bernie Ecclestone has been forced to delay the introduction until at least the Spanish Grand Prix, as FOM cannot prepare or test the necessary timing software in time.

With the introduction of the new format now put back, Marchionne wants the format looked at again.

“I think we need more discussions about the new qualifying format,” he told reporters during a media briefing at the Geneva motor show.

“We must be careful not to upset the system. I’m not sure Ferrari can accept Bernie’s ideas.

“We need to understand it better – and I don’t think every team agrees with the proposal.”
