Marrakech interested in hosting Formula E race

More cities are throwing their weight behind the Formula E series, with the Moroccan city of Marrakech the latest to express their interest in hosing a race.

The North African city is one of a number of cities linked to hosting the all-electric series including Sydney, Adelaide, New York, Lucerne and Montreal, along with other projects rumoured in India, South Africa and Brazil.

Marrakech already hosts a round of the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), which currently races on a high-speed street circuit. It is going to be modified and shorted for 2016, with organiser Stephane Roux keen to host a Formula E race in the future.

Talking to Motorsport.com, he said, “We are discussing with Formula E.”

“The series’ organisers are interested in a venue like Marrakech.

“An African place, the only continent where the series is not established yet, which really appeals to them.

“The constructors are for it, too, because the Moroccan automotive market is growing fast – it is among the few markets in the world with a double-digit yearly growth, after India and China.”

Although aimed at attracting industry, it also promotes the area as a tourist destination which has suffered after the attacks in Tunisia, and the current restrictions on flights to Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt.

The calendar for the third season of Formula E is due by the end of March and is expected to reveal a few changes. The first round in Beijing has been questioned, with nearby Hong Kong already announced increasing the anticipated number of events to 12.
