It’s safe to say the news that Formula One would be altering its qualifying format as early as this season did not go down well with all Formula One fans.
The new format is as follows:
Q1
-16 minutes duration;
– After 7 minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated;
– Slowest driver eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag;
– 7 drivers eliminated, 15 progress to Q2.
Q2
– 15 minutes duration;
– After 6 minutes, slowest driver eliminated;
– Slowest driver eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag;
– 7 drivers eliminated, 8 progress to Q3.
Q3
– 14 minutes;
– After 5 minutes, slowest driver eliminated;
– Slowest driver eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag;
– 2 drivers left in final 1 minute 30 seconds.
The final elimination in each session occurs at the chequered flag – not when time is up.
You can see the reactions from Formula One fans on twitter below.
Josh had his own ideas as to why qualifying was changing, apologies for the language.
Twitter: To me this new Qualifying Format is a calculated distraction from the fact that #F1 doesn’t know what the fuck it’s doing for 2017. (@RealRacingRoots)
Jonny doesn’t think it needed changing
Twitter: Standard #F1. Try & fix thing that was least broken with new qualifying format which looks unnecessarily complicated https://t.co/6wMDVCYQzs (@JonnyGreenSport)
Jon Noble made a valid point
Twitter: Before I crash out: if #F1 had epic Ferrari v Mercedes duel, would we be messing with quali rules & silly reverse grid ideas? #itsnotbroke (@NobleF1)
Will was part of the few that like the new qualifying format idea
Twitter: I’m very much a fan of the new qualifying format. The head-to-head at the end will be very exciting! (@theWPTformula)
Our very own Connor had a short angry rant
Twitter: The new ‘qualifying format’ is a complete joke. I don’t think the current qualifying format is the problem and does not need changing. (@ConMcDonaghF1)
Finally, Grace summed up the mood of many perfectly
Twitter: F1 needs many alterations. The format of qualifying isn’t one of them. (@Grace_Wilko)
