F1 teams given free choice of tyres for testing

Pirelli has announced they will give more freedom to Formula One teams for this year’s pre-season testing.

Motorsport.com have reported that Pirelli is set to open up tyre choice for the two pre-season tests in Barcelona, unlike previous years where the teams were only allowed to choose half of the tyre compounds supplied by Pirelli.

This season, of the 35 sets allocated for each test, teams will be allowed to choose 33 sets and the remaining two sets have to be one set of the green striped intermediates and the blue striped wet weather tyres.

The move was inspired by the new 2016 tyre rule change which will see teams been given greater freedom to choose up to three different compounds for a race weekend.

Pirelli has also brought in a new purple ultrasoft tyre for the 2016 season, but it’s unlikely we will see a lot of these in the Barcelona tests due to the high levels of degradation at the Spanish GP track.

The Monaco Grand Prix will likely be the first race weekend where we will see the new ultrasoft tyres. It’s also likely will we see a very small number of super-soft tyres as in 2015, Pirelli opted to bring the two hardest compounds to the Spanish Grand Prix.

The first of two pre-season tests will take place from the 22nd of February to Thursday the 25th of February.
