Berlin set to retain Formula E race

Berlin looks set to remain the home of Formula E in Germany with the race expected to be moved from the former Templehof Airport to the city streets.

A decision is expected soon on the change of venue, with the Norisring last week ruling themselves out of hosting the race and a race in Munich now also looking unlikely.

Series CEO, Alejandro Agag confirmed to Sports Business Daily the current plan, “We still haven’t got everything finalized but it’s looking positive,” he said. “I hope that in the next two to three weeks we can have news on where exactly we are going to race, but we are focusing on racing in the streets of Berlin.”

With the number of landmarks in the centre of Berlin, it would make for a fascinating backdrop including the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and the Fernsehturm Berlin, although the location of a proposed Berlin street circuit is yet to be disclosed.

With the race taking place on May 21st, it doesn’t give much time for a race to be organised, especially in a capital city which has no motorsport infrastructure.

The race had to be moved from its season one home after the government decided to use the facility to house refugees fleeing Syria. With the venue ruled out before Christmas, work has been ongoing to find a replacement.

The series continues next Saturday in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires.
