World Champion Lewis Hamilton has been nominated for BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Hamilton is a member of a twelve person shortlist containing many other British sporting greats. Among them is tennis star Andy Murray, long distance runner Mo Farah and heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill.
The Englishman is the current holder of the award, having pipped golfer Rory McIlroy to last years trophy. He has been runner-up twice, in 2007 and 2008.
SPOTY has never been won in consecutive years, but fellow Formula One stars Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill are the joint-leaders in wins, both having won the prize twice.
Hamilton has been nominated after a fantastic year of racing, winning his third World Championship by a large margin, and had the title wrapped up with three races remaining.
He comes up against tough competition, with a successful year for British sport meaning he comes up against a member of the Davis Cup winning team and the captain of England’s successful Women’s World Cup squad.
