Pirelli confirms brand new tyre compound to be used at street circuits

Pirelli, Formula One’s official tyre supplier, have declared that their new ultrasoft tyre will be used specifically for street circuits in the 2016 season.

They hope to offer more flexibility for teams in tyre choice and hope to continue to expand on tyre compounds for different styles of Grand Prix.

The new tyre compound will be an option, along with the soft, medium and hard tyres.

Hembery said that the ultrasoft compound may have a more limited use than the supersoft tyres, which have been used in just six Grand Prix this year.

He added that ‘Cars are sliding less and the change we made is a boost in terms of wear levels.’

‘It’s only for the street circuits because as we saw in Monaco and in Singapore the wear levels are very low at the moment,” said Hembery.

‘Cars are sliding less and the change we made is a boost in terms of wear levels.’

‘Maybe too much, but with the lack of testing we’re not being able to make any further changes to the product so we’re living with that we have because the cars will be quicker next year.’

‘Every year they improve, so what was okay last year may be quite dramatically different next year.’

The tracks that this new tyre compound could be suitable for includes Monaco, Sochi and possibly the potential new track in Azerbaijan.
