Lewis Hamilton commented on today’s race, saying it was “impossible to overtake” at the Interlagos track. Despite this ruling from the defending World Champion, rookie Max Verstappen performed some simply outstanding overtaking. For defying the opinions of others, I’m giving the title of Star Driver to Max Verstappen, once again.

We’re all aware of Max’s ability to overtake when the odds are stacked against him which is why I shouldn’t have been as shocked as I was when the Dutchman made a move on Sergio Perez. It was lap 32 and not a lot had happened since lights out. Verstappen was being closely pursued by Romain Grosjean. However, in true Verstappen style, Max leapt to the edge of the track, finding himself wheel-to-wheel with Sergio Perez. The gap between the two drivers was getting smaller and smaller, Max kept his nerve and not seconds later he was in ninth place, ahead of Perez. This was only one of his overtakes from the race.

This incredible balance of risk and caution is what will lead to Max’s success. David Coulthard said the overtake was the move “of a champion” which is something I’m sure Max was thrilled to hear. With his consistent performance, it’s no surprise that fans and established motorsport figures are discussing the likelihood of the 18-year-old moving to Ferrari within the next few years.

For now, I’d like to congratulate Max on his performance in his Toro Rosso which he seems to be in sync with. I look forward to seeing his overtakes in a fortnight at Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi.
