Button ‘scared of leaders pace’ but happy with performance

McLaren driver Jenson Button says that they are still a long way off the front-runners pace, but is happy that his team are making progress.

The McLaren showed good reliability on the day, and the 35-year-old hadn’t suffered the same issues that Fernando had been suffering all weekend.

The team finished just 12 seconds off tenth place, but both Jenson and Fernando are happy that they were able to at least go the race distance.

However, Button still feels the team are still a long way off: “We were still a long way off the front-runners pace,” he said. “When they come past it’s scary how fast they are, especially on the straights.”

“But as for the midfield pack, through the corners we were pretty competitive, which means you can have a bit of fun out there.”

The Brit has also reiterated how hard the team is working, and is looking forward to the future: “There’s a lot of room for improvement, but it feels like we’re going in the right direction.” He said.

“We’re a team that’s pushing hard and we’ll make massive strides in the winter. I’m really looking forward to next season. Hopefully in the next race, Abu Dhabi, we’ll do a little better again.”
